Ketamine treatment is currently entering a phase of popularity and increased promotion. There are many reports of significant success with ketamine in the treatment of depression, substance use issues, and trauma. But the speed of its increasing popularity seems to have left behind the discussion of risks, pitfalls, and possible negative outcomes. This panel reviewed the benefits, necessary accompanying protocols, and potentially harmful outcomes from a clinical and social perspective. Best practices for clinicians wishing to support clients receiving ketamine treatment were also reviewed.

Melanie Mallory, MD/ Ph.D. (she, her)

Dr. Melanie Malloy is an Emergency Medicine trained Physician based in Brooklyn, New York, whose path to medicine has fulfilled a childhood dream. Born in Tampa to a physician mother and healthcare administrator father, Melanie loved the sciences as a youth and felt drawn to the arts and humanities, eventually earning her B.A. in Philosophy at Yale University in 2002. There, her thesis focused on transcendence, entheogens, and meditative drawing. After a year in her family’s native Haiti as Co-Director of the Kellogg community education program at Hôpital Albert Schweitzer, Melanie was ready to embark on her medical studies, which she began at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN. From there, she pursued an MD Ph.D. degree focused on the molecular biology of battling oxidative stress. In her studies, she learned the essential role of natural foods -many of which activated the pathways she was elucidating -in health and well-being. Melanie trained in Emergency Medicine at Kings County Hospital. She served as an attending physician at Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was known as a friendly face whose patients instantly felt comfortable in her presence. At Ember Health, she feels grateful that her career has again led to wellness, education, and helping people in their path to well-being.
